The following summary has been provided to support the 2008 direction of travel assessment:

Manchester City Council is improving well, making good progress against its priorities and improving the quality of life for local people. Good progress is being made in improving children’s services. Services for vulnerable children are improving and rises in education results, especially at GCSE, are encouraging. Crime levels are falling, including burglaries, and the number of homeless people has reduced significantly. The Council is successfully focusing its attention on local neighbourhoods, helping to improve community pride and strengthening the way residents get on together. Regeneration continues in many areas of the city and in developing the city centre economy, but this is being challenged by the present economic climate. The health of citizens is being improved, but outcomes remain below the national average and those for people with mental health needs require further improvement. Continued action is being taken to improve health, with promising falls in teenage pregnancy achieved. Service improvement continues to be driven by the Council’s effective improvement programme, and the value for money of services has improved. Partnership working is strong and helping to address areas requiring significant improvement. Corporate arrangements have been strengthened, and the Council’s ambitions remain strong.
